Tenco collaborates with Matvin Group to deliver innovative utility network services to The Botanic Silverdale

The Botanic Silverdale has created a vibrant and exclusive retirement village in the Auckland region. With such care devoted to the resident experience, Matvin Group was careful to ensure that a private utility network catered to a range of resident needs.

As the largest provider of private utility network services in New Zealand, Tenco was well positioned to implement a bespoke electricity network on behalf of Matvin Group - the developer of this unique, multi-staged retirement village in Silverdale. Tenco has served the property industry since 1998 and manages over 350 networks spanning electricity water, gas and fibre.

With over 480 electricity connections and extensive communal facilities, The Botanic requires careful infrastructure planning. Tenco was selected to implement a private utility network at the outset to avoid higher costs of doing so at a later stage. This decision means that residents see no impact from the network, have an active connection upon their arrival and can switch to their preferred electricity retailer if they choose to do so.

Tenco provides ongoing support to The Botanic as the village grows each month and a comprehensive solution that includes:

  1. local network connection agreement review

  2. private network setup and management

  3. staged implementation of downstream connections in line with village construction

  4. provisioning all retail electricity meters

  5. electricity procurement services for the communal supply

The Botanic Silverdale’s Senior Development Manager Jeremy Quiding says, “With a construction cycle spanning several years, trusting that our service partners can deliver now and into the future is key to the success of our model. Delivering an experience to residents that is best-in-class is part of our core strategy. Tenco allows us to focus on delivering the development, while they manage the meter installations and the issuing of new connections in a programmatic manner. The benefit of this is secondary only to the recurring revenue stream that the private network generates. And the fact that this private network allows residents to have their own connections and select their own electricity retailer is a key benefit as well.”

Tenco Managing Director Nick Price who oversaw the project says, “Matvin Group is the type of client we love to work with, their willingness to consider innovative solutions meant that Tenco can continue to support them as their business evolves.”

“We are seeing more retirement village owners adopt the embedded network model (a specific type of private utility network) as it provides a way for the village owners to capture recurring revenue while allowing residents to select their own electricity retailer. Compared with other models that exist in the market, the village owner does not invoice their residents for electricity use and are not exposed to volatile market pricing. Revenue captured can be allocated towards maintaining the electrical infrastructure within the village over the long-term.”

The Botanic is quickly becoming known as the standard in the next generation of retirement village living. With a private utility network operating in the background, the village owners can rely on a recurring revenue stream to support the maintenance of this critical infrastructure without compromising a first-in-class resident experience.
